Notwithstanding his prestigious military career, and his formative grounding, Göring crossed the line from being a German to a barbarian. He diverted from a civilized, and cultured, figure to an anti-Semitic, homicidal mass murderer. Göring appeared at the Trials of War Criminals before the Nüremberg Military Tribunals (N.M.T.) (1946-’49), and was found guilty on four counts: 1) ‘Crimes against peace’, 2) ‘Crimes against humanity’, 3) ‘War crimes’, and 4) ‘Conspiracy’ i.e., in having committed the offences described in the first three categories. He was sentenced to death, by hanging, but committed suicide 15 October 1946 (aged 53) before the sentence could be carried out.
